Fourth of July Coyote
This picture is a
typical "ledger drawing" style from the period of
time when many of the Ledger Artist spent time in
military prisons. At this time many of the military
wives discovered the Indian Artists and their
Ledger Drawing style. The wives often commissioned
art work, and this art work was many time of life
on the Military Post. Parades and ceremonies were a
favorite, especially the American Flag ( perhaps as
a Medicine Power symbol).
It stands to reason Coyote would have liked to have
seen himself as "Head of the Parade, with the most
Power",thus this picture was born.
Coyote is one of the major "trickster " figures in
the oral tradition of many of the Native American
groups. He emulates the human (usually male) alter
ego, every bodies favorite father, uncle or
brother, who you dearly love, but wish they would
"shape up"!
